Saving Our Own Hide

You may recall that beautiful deer skin that a hunter donated to our program last year that our students stretched and scraped.

I mentioned that we were saving the doe's head so we could retrieve the brain come spring and learn about brain tanning. Brain tanning is a traditional method of treating an animal hide with an emulsified solution of brains and water to make the hide soft and supple even if it gets wet. It is a lengthy process and a great introduction to the concept. We hope to try it again soon.

The final step was smoking the hide for insect-repellency and to preserve its suppleness.
